The museum of Pälämäki tells the story of the croft-dominated settlement of Jämsä in the 18th and 19th centuries. Traditionally, the grounds of a Jämsä peasant house were rectangular, with buildings on three sides and dividing into the so called man-yard and livestock yard. The buildings in the Pälämäki grounds are situated in a more scattered way due to the rocky and hillocky terrain. Usually the grounds of a house or croft would also have a cowshed and a sauna and a bit further away, a workshop and a drying barn. These building are missing from the museum grounds.

Nowadays the museum grounds have eight other buildings apart from the main building.
